December 5, 2006: Elizabeth, Colorado — Students hand-addressed letters to families and friends, parents and teachers hosted golf tournaments and wrote and received grants. In less than a year, supporters of the Elbert County Charter School raised $100,000 required to meet a matching fund challenge issued by the developers of its future neighbor — Wild Pointe Ranch.
On Thursday, Dec. 8 at 10 a.m. at the construction site of the new school facility in Elizabeth, Wild Pointe Partners will deliver on their promise to match raised funds when they present a $100,000 check to School Principal Merlin Holmes. The funds will be used to equip the new facility.
The $100,000 award is in addition to Wild Pointe Partners’ initial donation of the land on which the new school is being built. Such support reflects WPP’s enlightened approach to community development, distinguished by its preservation of the environment, commitment to quality at every level and an unwavering goal to meet the needs of a neighborhood, close to home. Students living at Wild Pointe Ranch will be able to walk to Elbert County Charter School.
“We are delighted to be in partnership with the dedicated people of this school,” said Karl Nyquist, WPP Principle along with David Pretzler. “And we are proud to contribute to the establishment of a permanent home for the students of Elbert County Charter School.”
The school site is within the spectacular 1,100-acre Wild Pointe Ranch. The community features spacious single family homes on 5 acre sites, 17 miles of walking, horseback riding and biking trails and scenic overlooks along with the Shoppes at Wild Pointe, a collection of retail and service businesses.
Elbert County Charter School has been without a permanent facility since it began 9 years ago under the provisions of the Elizabeth School District. Using a back-to-basics approach, it emphasizes a core knowledge curriculum for students in grades K-12. Next fall, doors will open to a facility designed to accommodate the current enrollment of about 350 students, with a capacity to house 500 students in all.
“This effort has involved everyone — students, parents, teachers and the community at large,” said Nyquist. “It is an educational lesson in and of itself, and an excellent example of what can be accomplished through hard work and perseverance.”
Presenting the check will be Jace Glick, of Re/MAX Alliance on behalf of Wild Pointe Partners. Accepting the funds, along with Principal Holmes, will be the school’s board of directors John Bleich, David Healy, B.C. Roberts, Shula Gorski, John Huesinga, plus Mary Ann Ball who led the fundraising committee.
